Prescription lenses in sun glasses is not a new concept. There are plenty of options available to those of us who need prescriptions on a daily basis. Often times we are limited to snap-on lenses, transition lenses and cheaply made frames. Heck, if you’re like me you often just put a pair of sunglasses over your prescription eye glasses. Are any of these options the end of the world? No. But, with all these options come risks. I can’t count how many times I’ve lost a pair of glasses, scratched them, broke the frames, lost a lens, etc. I’m an active guy and I’m rough on my stuff. My wife often uses the line, “This is why we can’t have nice things,” when referring to me.

A few months ago I was approached by the good people at SportRx asking if I would use and review one of their products. The timing was more than perfect as we were in the middle of ice fishing season. If you’re an ice angler you know how incredibly bright it can be out there on the ice. I also had a trip planned to fish around Boca Grande, FL.

Working with the fantail_blk_blue_2helpful staff they recommended a pair of Costa Fantail with 580G, blue mirror lenses. The ordering process was a breeze. To be honest, the hardest part of the process was finding my prescription.

After religiously wearing these Costa prescription glasses for a couple of months I noticed a few things:

#1 – Less to Carry

First off, the fact that I no longer had to carry multiple frames with me while out on the water was a huge bonus! I already have enough gear in the boat and when you’re trying to net a fish you know stepping and kicking gear is inevitable. And yes, I have two pairs of sun glasses sitting on the bottom of my favorite lake. Half the time when I’m struggling to tie fluorocarbon and other lines it’s because I can’t see what I’m doing with any sort of accuracy.

#2 – High Quality

The second thing that really stood out to me is the quality of the frames. They are thick and heavy, but not in the sense of being bulky. You can tell when handling them that they are quality glasses and that’s usually the first comment I hear when others have held my glasses. The glass lenses increased visibility and helped to identify underwater structure better than my other pair of polarized glasses.

#3 – Comfort

Lastly, because the frames are wraps they stay put and don’t slide around. I’m wearing a hat 90% of the time and my biggest annoyance is with frames that don’t fit under the brim of my baseball cap. Theses fit comfortably around my head and don’t interfere with my hat.

Bonus!

Besides using these glasses on the water I’ve found some other scenarios where they come in handy such as driving (I can see the signs now!), finding my golf balls in the woods and working on a computer outside. If you know me you know I’m an engineer here at Fishidy and coding is what I do. I usually can never enjoy the sun while working because of glare but with these glasses I’ve been able to see my screen with ease.

I can’t imagine ever owning another pair of sun glasses after wearing these.
